Then I became the Executive Director for the Time Bank of the Rockies and realized that if people were going to be aware of the good things our organization does, I had better get over all that and step into this new (to me) world. So I signed up for online webinars where people were flinging around words and acronyms I did not know (SEO?). I needed something more basic and more personal.
I found that at InSync Media.
Allie Rogers, who teaches the Social Media Accelerator class, is an excellent teacher. She is an expert in the field but she cheerfully engaged with the most basic questions, sometimes over again. The class was just the right size – small enough that she gave individual attention and addressed the particulars each student was working with (I was the only nonprofit organization in the mix); big enough to have other students who asked questions I wouldn’t have thought of, and sometimes offered tips they had come across as they worked through the information.
The way the class is set up, meeting on zoom where the sessions can be recorded, and alternating between information presentations and hands-on practice, is brilliant. I confess I didn’t always do the work between classes. Nevertheless, I always picked up the lessons, either by watching Allie work with the class members who had done the work, or by reading the material available on the website, or by re-watching the sessions.
I’m still working through my emotional distrust of social media. But that’s its own issue, no longer tangled with a sense of helpless overwhelm.
Now I know how to use Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. I know how to sign up for different platforms, how to plan and schedule messages, how to create a variety of posts, including videos. I have an extensive list of possible subjects, and strategies for coming up with ideas. I even know how to run a contest on social media. I’m facing the new year with a calendar of ideas and plans to make the Time Bank’s message better known in the community.
