Your buyers are asking AI tools about your business. The tools answer with a few sentences and a few names. Most owners have never read those answers.
That answer forms an impression before a buyer reaches your site. It might be accurate. It might be three years out of date. It might hand the recommendation straight to a competitor. You can pour money into marketing for months without ever checking it.
So check it. If you have wondered what ChatGPT says about your business, this is how you find out. It takes about five minutes, and you already have everything you need.
Run the Test
Pick one AI tool to start, or open ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini side by side. Ask three questions in your buyer’s own words.
- “Tell me about [your business name].”
- “I need [your service] in [your city]. Who should I call?”
- “Is [your business] or [a competitor] the better choice for [a specific need]?”
Read each reply in full. The useful part is usually in the middle, not the opening line.
That is the test. This is the fast version. The full audit, with crawler access, source checks, and ongoing tracking, lives in our guide to AI visibility for websites.
Now Read the Answer
What the AI thinks you are
Look at the first answer. Read it as if you were a customer who has never heard of you. Does it describe what your business does now? Or does it describe an old version of your business, or get it wrong? Sometimes the AI describes a different company with a similar name. Sometimes it states a detail that is not true. A customer reading this has no way to know what is right and what is wrong. They believe it and move on.
Recommended, or only listed
Does the AI tool mention your business, or does it recommend your business? There are different levels of recommendation. You might be one name in a list of other businesses. Or the AI might give you several sentences and a link to your website.
Which competitors it ties you to
Look at the other business names in the answer. These are the businesses the AI sees as your competitors. Sometimes the list makes you look good. Sometimes it groups you with businesses you would never call competitors. Sometimes it leaves out the businesses you beat every week. This shows you which companies the AI connects you to. It may not match the list you would make yourself.
Do the tools tell the same story?
Run the three tools side by side and compare the answers. If they mostly agree, there is a clear picture of your business online. That picture may be good or bad, but it is consistent. If they contradict each other, there is not much solid information about you online. Each tool is filling the gaps with its own guesses. Getting three different answers to the same question tells you something on its own. If the AI tools cannot agree on what you do, a customer will not be able to figure it out either.
What a Weak Result Means
A poor result is common. It says nothing about the quality of your work. It means there is a gap between how good you are and how well a machine can understand that from what is online.
The reasons are usually simple:
- Your business details do not match across your website and your online listings.
- Your best knowledge is in your head or shared on sales calls. It is not written down on a web page.
- Not many outside sources, like reviews or articles, mention you.
An AI tool needs those sources to trust what it says about you. Good businesses get left out for these reasons every day.
Keep one thing in mind. This is one snapshot in time. The answers change as the AI tools update and as new information about you appears online. Today’s result is a starting point. It shows you where you stand right now. It does not show if things are getting better or worse.
Where to Take It From Here
The five-minute test is enough to tell if you have a problem. It is not built to fix one.
Fixing it takes more work. It means asking every question your buyers ask, on every tool they use. It means tracking how the answers change over time. Then it means correcting the causes one by one. That is the work we do. We show you the full picture of what AI says about your business. Then we give you a clear plan for what to change first.
Start with the test. If the answers surprise you, that is worth knowing today.
